DIRECTIONS TO THE LABORATORY
The Klamath Falls Field Station (KFFS) was established in 1999 at Klamath Falls, Oregon. The KFFS conducts research within the Klamath River Basin with particular emphasis on Upper Klamath Lake. The KFFS has the facilities and resources to conduct research in population dynamics and behavioral ecology of lake suckers and salmonids. The Klamath River Basin has been dramatically altered and numerous ecological problems exist including the recovery of endangered Lost River and shortnose suckers. Research is funded through the U.S. Geological Survey as well as through reimbursable contracts with the Bureau of Reclamation and other agencies.
Research has focused on obtaining information on the basic life history, population dynamics, and behavioral ecology of Lost River and shortnose suckers in Upper Klamath Lake. The lake has become hypereutrophic due to current land-use practices and water quality appears to be the major limiting factor to the recovery of sucker populations. In the future, KFFS plans to continue research on different life stages of lake suckers as well as other species of interest to Department of Interior, Tribal, and state agencies.
Capabilities of the KFFS include:
- Fish sampling in large lakes
- Mark-Recapture studies and analyses
- Water quality monitoring
- Biotelemetry
