DIRECTIONS TO THE LABORATORY

The Columbia River Research Laboratory (CRRL) was established in 1978 at Cook, Washington, in the Columbia River Gorge east of Portland. The CRRL-the Center's largest field station-carries out research throughout the U.S. portion of the river's 3,500 sq. mi. drainage (parts of five states), with work centered on approximately 400 river miles.

Our mission is to serve the public by providing scientific information to support the stewardship of our Nation's fish and aquatic resources, with emphasis on the Columbia River Basin. As a part of the USGS Western Fisheries Research Center, we conduct objective, relevant research and seek partnerships to help fulfill this mission. Although salmonids are the focus of our research program, sturgeons, lampreys, and other members of the fish assemblage of the Columbia River and its tributaries are emphasized in our work. Research objectives address the biological effects resulting from hydropower generation, other human developments, and natural influences on aquatic productivity.

The scientific and technical expertise at the CRRL ranges from telemetry studies of movement, behaviors and fish physiology to modeling of aquatic community dynamics. The mission and capability of the CRRL has outgrown its present location and a new larger fishery facility in the Columbia River Gorge is planned.

Capabilities of the CRRL include:

  • Boat barn.Approximately 30 research vessels to 26 feet, deployed throughout the basin
  • Electroshocking equipment ranging from backpack to boat-mounted
  • State-of-the-art fish telemetry capability, including fixed receivers on dams and fish depth readout technology
  • Wetlab with fish behavior research capabilities
  • Dive team
  • Access to numerous hatcheries for rearing-related studies
  • Office and administrative space

The CRRL works in partnership with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Bonneville Power Administration, the Bureau of Reclamation, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Native American tribes, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, universities, consulting firms, and others.
