Jeff conducts ecological research in three primary areas. The first is studying the ecological effects of river restoration and dam removal on the Elwha River. In 2008, two dams will be removed from the Elwha River, allowing anadromous salmonids to return to over 70 miles of spawning habitat in Olympic National Park. Research scientists from multiple state and federal agencies, and numerous universities are involved in a collaborative interdisciplinary research program for the Elwha. The second area of research, with Dr. John Emlen, involves developing an ecological modeling approach that determines the population growth dynamics of species as functions of their ecological surroundings. This approach, called Interaction Assessment (INTASS), uses emergent patterns of dispersion to parameterize population models. Once parameterized, population growth projections of a species, as a function of competitors, predators, and physical factors, can be placed in a management context. Currently, INTASS models are being developed for multiple taxa and systems. The third research program involves the development of ecological indicators of landscape change for use at military installations in the southeastern United States. Primarily, this involves studying aspects of terrestrial systems, such as ant and vegetation communities, physical habitat properties, and soil microbial dynamics, that respond in a predictable and correlative way to disturbance from military training activities.
